Construction Logisticians

The role of a Construction Logistician is an exciting and fulfilling one, giving you the opportunity to develop and work with a variety of people from across the globe. MSF recruits specifically for construction logisticians - usually when a new project is being started or an old one rehabilitated or expanded.

Construction logisticians may design the structure and will have to prepare all resources required (i.e. labour, budget, materials) as well as supervise the progress of construction work. Logisticians are usually based in the projects, although there are also capital logistics positions as well. Wherever they are, they are instrumental to keep MSF’s programmes functioning.

Your skills in cross-cultural human resource management and communication will be important, as the role involves training and evaluation of staff under your supervision. 


 Key responsibilities will include

  • Construction and renovation of structures, including hospitals, clinics, offices and team accommodation 
  • Design the structure of facilities like a feeding centre, departments of or a full-fledged hospital structure or clinics, expat accommodation, shelters 
  • Budgeting and planning the ordering of materials needed for construction
  • Management of local purchase including asking for quotations and supervising procurement activities
  • Management of local labour for construction activities 
  • Training, supervising and managing logistics staff in the team
  • Support administration of the department in terms of hiring and contract management in collaboration with HR
  • Interacting with local authorities and organisations if needed 


 Essential criteria 

  • Significant experience in construction-related roles 
  • Experience in supervising and managing others in a construction capacity 
  • Experience in building design including planning of financial and human resources 
  • Previous experience in analysis of construction plans and resources for the project including labour, equipment, materials, quotes and budget 
  • Awareness of water and sanitation issues 
  • Good negotiation skills 
  • Experience of overseas building projects and experience with negotiating with local authorities is an asset
  • Experience in supervising and training staff involved in construction work
  • Good level of working on spreadsheets and databases.
  • Good interpersonal skills and flair for building and maintaining good relationships
  • Good time management combined with strong organisational skills, and ability to multi-task and work under pressure
  • Ability to demonstrate creative solutions to problems and effectively manage change
  • Willing to work in unstable areas and ability to cope in a difficult and unpredictable environment
  • Available for a minimum of 9-12 months
