Communications Manager

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)/ Doctors Without Borders is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters and exclusion from healthcare in more than 65 countries. MSF offers assistance to people based on need and irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation. 

MSF has worked in India since 1999, providing free-of-charge essential healthcare to people in remote areas, and specialist care for people affected by HIV/AIDS, malnutrition, hepatitis C, antibiotic resistance, tuberculosis, kala azar and sexual and gender-based violence. We also respond to natural disasters and other emergencies, provide mental healthcare and advocate for the development of more effective and affordable medicines to improve access to treatment for people everywhere.

We currently run projects in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Manipur, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.MSF was awarded the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development in 1996 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999.

Job Purpose

  • Creates, plans, implements, and coordinates brand awareness campaigns designed to raise awareness about MSF’s principles, work and presence in India and in the rest of the world.
  • Creates and/or coordinates the development of content and communication materials (online and offline). 
  • Supervises the creation, development and implementation of public events including yearly action plans developed by the Event Officer.
  • Develops a 3 years public events strategy supported by the Event Officer and under the direction of the Head of Communications and the Head of Fundraising

Campaign strategy and planning

  1. Develops Brand campaign strategies and activity plans including targets, within budget and timeline.
  2. Ensures the implementation, tracking, measurement and analysis of online and offline awareness campaigns, on time, within budget and against the targets.
  3. Brief external agencies, manages relationship and monitors deliverables against campaign brief and targets.
  4. Deliver campaign activity presentations and regular internal presentations on outcomes against main objectives and targets.

Production of communication materials

  1. Conceptualizes, creates and/or commissions the development of communication materials including photo stories, videos, brochures, calendars, in line with the MSF India style guide and graphic guideline and supervise the production.
  2. Coordinates and supervises the work of photographers, videographers, designers, etc.
  3. Reviews the quality of final print or online content before release with the Head of Communications.

Event strategy, planning and monitoring

  1. Develops a 3 years public events strategy supported by the Event Officer and under the direction of the Head of Communications and the Head of Fundraising.
  2. Coaches, supervises and monitors the creation of content developed by the Event Officer in accordance within the frame of goals, objectives, budget and timing.
  3. Delivers and/or coordinates the delivery of events activity presentations and regular presentations on outcomes internally
  4. Supervises the evaluation and reports on progress toward stated goals and objectives, and effectiveness of communications outreach efforts developed by the Event Officer.

Management and departmental administration

  1. Attends regularly scheduled departmental meetings to share information, brainstorm solutions, and coordinate priorities.
  2. Participates in planning and implementation of MSF-India’s communications strategies, policies and procedures.
  3. Carries out any duties that may reasonably be required by the Communication Manager and/or Head of communications in the light of the main purpose of the job.
  4. Attends regularly scheduled staff meetings, in-office presentations/debates to stay informed on important MSF topics.
  5. Supervises and sets clear attainable objectives for the Communication assistant, the Event Officer and intern/volunteers. Provides ongoing feedback in a context of mutual respect. Evaluates their job performance in accordance with established MSF procedures.
  6. Hire team members when required


Key Dimensions

  • Supervises  Event Officer, Communication Assistant and Audio Visual Officer
  • Accountable for the performances (against targets) of all events organized by the Event Officer
  • Develops and implement PAN India visibility campaigns reaching out to several lakhs of people every year
  • Manages daily work, relationship and performances of communication agencies
  • Manages a yearly budget 
  • Accountable for the quality of all communication materials produced by the Communication Assistant


Key Performance Indicators

  • Produces 4 videos/AVs/Photo stories per year to showcase MSF’s work in India and abroad towards MSF India target audiences (including End of the year video)
  • Every year, commission one professional photographers to cover MSF India projects in order to refresh the photo database and according to specific needs 
  • Ensure reports presenting analysis of each events against main objectives and targets to Head of Communication and Management team of MSF India.

  • Works closely with all members of the Communication as well as the General Director, the association, the fundraising and HR departments.
  • Builds strong relationships and collaborates strategically and actively with
    • MSF India operations (through the PR and advocacy Managers)
    • Access Campaign India office based in Delhi
    • Colleagues from the MSF movement worldwide 
    • Supervise the Event Officer, the Communication Assistant and interns/volunteers 


Other Indicative Requirements

Educational Qualifications  & Functional / Technical Skills

Master degree in Mass Communication/Advertising/Marketing or equivalent field from a reputed institute and/or a combination of relevant professional experiences in line with the responsibilities listed in this job description

Relevant Experience (Type of experience and minimum number of years)

Minimum 5-7 years’ experience developing awareness/visibility campaigns and events, preferably with an INGO.

Other requirements (Behavioural, Language, Certifications etc.)

  • Managing multi online and offline campaigns simultaneously
  • Advertising, digital and SEM marketing knowledge and experience
  • Experience in conceptualizing, creating, and managing events
  • Ability to work independently, move projects from conceptual stages to launch/implementation.
  • Experience in creating marketing collateral and working with graphic designers, videographers, film makers, photographers and printers
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills
  • Creative, proactive, and flexible personality
  • Ability to handle a large volume of work and different project at the same time
  • Outstanding proven time management and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize ongoing vs. immediate needs appropriately.
