MSF India launched its who cares campaign

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), with celebrated citizens Anurag Kashyap & Farooq Sheikh, campaigns to build awareness of medical humanitarian issues

New Delhi, 2 July 2013

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), an international medical humanitarian organisation, rolls out its “Who cares?” campaign at Alliance Française de Delhi on July 2 to engage the Indian public with pressing health issues in the country and across the globe.

At the campaign’s launch, renowned filmmaker Anurag Kashyap and veteran actor Farooq Sheikh will interact with MSF’s staff about their medical projects in India and how they reach out to people most in need of healthcare.

The issues that will take stage are providing treatment and counseling for patients with HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis (TB), medical care for mothers and newborns in rural settings, management of medical care during emergencies, and treating kala azar, which has a very high prevalence in Bihar.

“Too many people die of kala azar, a neglected disease that can be cured with effective treatment.” says Anurag Kashyap. “If left untreated, it is fatal in most cases. That’s why we should support MSF to raise awareness about this neglected disease and to provide treatment”.

As part of the “Who cares?” campaign, an interactive exhibition takes visitors behind the scenes of MSF’s medical projects in India and across the globe. The exhibition has been set up to help people understand different critical medical issues and what is involved in addressing them, often in challenging situations. It will run from July 3 to 9 at Alliance Française de Delhi.

MSF India’s General Director, Martin Sloot, says, “Through this campaign, we seek to engage the Indian public with the lives of those who have no or very limited access to healthcare. MSF believes that everyone deserves access to healthcare, irrespective of their race, religion, gender or political affiliations”.

In 2013, the “Who cares” exhibition will travel to different venues in Delhi and Mumbai where MSF’s experienced staff will be present to answer questions about various pressing health needs and how MSF is helping meet these needs in India and other countries.

Note to editors

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid in over 70 countries around the world to people affected by wars, epidemics and disasters, and to people who are unable to access much-needed medical care.

We believe that everyone deserves access to healthcare, and we help people irrespective of their race, religion, gender or political affiliations. We do not take sides in any conflict and go where the needs are greatest. To maintain our independence, we rely on donations from individuals around the world for the majority of our income.

MSF has been working in India since 1999, providing free-of-charge essential healthcare to the people most in need in the states of Bihar, Manipur, Maharashtra, Jammu & Kashmir, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Nagaland.

In 1996, MSF received the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development, and in 1999 MSF was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
